According to official statistics, 12,000 people in Iran were infected with brucellosis, but according to unofficial statistics, this figure is much higher, MEHR agency quotes chairman of the Iranian Union of Physicians, Iradj Khosrovnia, as saying on Tuesday.
The disease is most prevalent among inhabitants of regions and villages, mainly in the areas of Loristan and Kurdistan, Khosrovnia said.
He said brucellosis infection occurs through direct contact with animals, as well as when using raw milk and cheese.
