Contributor of Azerbaijani Makhalifat Newspaper Ends Hunger Strike

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Rashid Hajili, the lawyer, stated on 4 June that the arrested contributor of the Azerbaijani Mukhalifat newspaper has ended his hunger strike on 3 June.

Yashar Agazadeh, the contributor of the newspaper, began a hunger strike on 29 May and Rovshan Kabirli and the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper began his hunger strike on 1 June. According to his lawyer, Agazadeh had suffered health problems.

The detainees both protested against the pressure and their illegal arrest saying that they were not happy with the conditions in the prisons.

Rafig Ramazanov, the Department Chief of the Penitentiary Service of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice, stressed that the journalists had ended their hunger strike. Kabirli abstained from food for one day and Agazadeh did not eat for 3 days. Ramazanov denied that during the strike the journalists had no medical care.

The journalists have been accused by the plaintiff of MP Jalal Aliyev on Article 147.2 of the Criminal Code and were sentenced to 2 years and 6 months imprisonment by the decision of the Yasamal District Court of Azerbaijan.

The journalists appealed the Court's decision.
