Pete Doherty 'faces jail' over drugs

(news.bbc.co.uk) - Singer Pete Doherty has been warned by a judge that he could face jail or a community order over drugs offences.

In July, the 28-year-old Babyshambles frontman pleaded guilty to driving illegally while in possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis. His car was stopped by officers in Kensington High Street, west London, on 5 May.

District Judge Davinder Lachlar adjourned the case for four weeks to "assess his (Doherty's) motivation".

His lawyer Sean Curran told the West London Magistrates' Court that Doherty "presents himself certainly looking a lot better" and was attending a detox programme.

Judge Lachlar did not impose a fine on Doherty saying that it was too early to see the results of his detox.

The judge said: "What I have in mind is to adjourn this matter for four weeks to assess his motivation. "What I have in mind is a community order or prison... if he does not show his motivation, it's prison - it's as simple as that."

The singer volunteered to show the position of an implant in his stomach designed to help him give up drugs.

Doherty was released on conditional bail. His case comes up for pre-sentence hearing on 4 September.

His mother attended the hearing with him. At an earlier hearing the judge told Doherty to attend a rehabilitation course for his drug addiction or warned he would go to jail.
