Turkmenistan has started harvesting its cotton on September 3. Approximately 1,050 tons are planned to be gathered in 2009 over the 545,000 hectares sowed.

Cotton growers managed to gather about 1 million tons in 2008. This figure slightly exceeded the 2007 figure.

According to the Turkmen Ministry of Agriculture, harvests are being gathered in the Akhal, Balkan, Lebap and Mary regions, and the north area of Turkmenistan's Dashoguz region will join in a week.

There are 150 receiving stations and more than 30 cotton gin enterprises.

Sowing in Turkmenistan in 2009 was provided by the territory's good natural soil conditions and was done in accordance with a plan approved by the ministry. Local and Russian cottons were chosen.

The campaign will be conducted using manufacturing equipment form the U.S., John Deere and Case, as well as equipment from Belarus.

According to forecasts from local professionals, there will be a rich cotton harvest in 2009. "It is necessary to take all measures to gather the harvest without suffering losses", Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimukhamedov said at a recent government meeting.
