Turkmenistan's President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov offered to create a special expert group that would work closely with the UN, its agencies and other international organizations dealing with water and water-energy resources.

The president stated on it during a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, held in New York under the 64th UN General Assembly, the Turkmen Dovlet khabarlary (TDH) state news agency reported.  

Berdimuhammedov said that the problem should be solved "only in a coherent and equitable basis and invited Ban Ki-Moon to a special meeting to be held in Ashgabat in November, 2009. The previous summit was held recently in Almaty (Kazakhstan) with the participation of Heads of the Central Asia countries.

"Turkmenistan implements its foreign policy strategy in strict accordance with the norms and principles of the UN", Berdimuhammedov said, stressing the need to establish a working group under the auspices of the UN with an aim to develop an international legal instrument serving as the "guarantor of security and stability of energy supplies to world markets.

Ban Ki-Moon expressed his gratitude for the new initiatives and constructive ideas addressed to solve the urgent problems of the region and welcomed the Turkmen position in the process of establishing peace in neighboring Afghanistan.
