Belarusian vice premier visits Turkmenistan

The Turkmen-Belarusian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation will start in Ashgabat on Sept. 28. Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Victor Burya will attend the event.

Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov is expected to receive head of the Belarusian delegation.

Cooperation in areas such as fuel and energy sector, construction and tourism is on the agenda. The previous meeting of the joint commission was held in Minsk in January, 2008.

Currently, Turkmenistan purchases products of tractor and automobile factories in Minsk, Amkodor road machinery. In addition, the Turkmen market was supplied with the Belarusian electricity, furniture and pharmaceutical products. In turn, Turkmenistan exports to Belarus its cotton and cotton yarn, textiles, hides and skins, wool, petroleum products.

Direct flights between Ashgabat and Minsk, which were interrupted 15 years ago, were resumed in August, 2007.

In June, 2009, Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko paid an official visit to Turkmenistan, during which there was made inventory of the agreement legal base and signed a number of intergovernmental agreements.

Berdimuhammedov is expected to pay a return visit to Belarus. At present, the sides are determining the date through diplomatic channels.
