US stocks change little despite positive employment data

US stock indices on Thursday saw little change despite a decrease in the number of applications for jobless benefits, dpa reported.

Applications for unemployment benefits declined by 15,000 to 372,000 in the week ended Dec. 31, Labour Department figures released on Thursday showed.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped a moderate 2.72 points, or 0.02 per cent, to 12,415.70. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 3.76 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 1,281.06. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose 21.50 points, or 0.81 per cent, to 2,669.86.

The US currency rose against the euro to 78.22 from 77.26 euro cents on Wednesday. The dollar dropped against the Japanese currency to 77.13 from 76.70 yen.
