Kazakh railway increases freight, passenger turnover in 2011

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) (Kazakh railway) increased freight turnover by 4.8 percent and passenger traffic by 5.3 percent in 2011 compared to the results of 2010.

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) (Kazakh railway) increased freight turnover by 4.8 percent and passenger traffic by 5.3 percent in 2011 compared to the results of 2010.

"Railway freight turnover in 2011 rose by 4.8 percent to 223.34 billion ton/km, passenger turnover in this period increased by 5.3 percent to14.65 billion passengers/km," the company said.

Moreover, some projects on the new railways construction were successfully completed and industrial capacities were commissioned in 2011.

The company upgraded 635 km of main routes, built 87 new stations, acquired 104 locomotives, 7,134 freight cars and 34 passenger coaches in 2011.

Moreover, the company launched seven new routes and new railway line from Uzen to state border with Turkmenistan and Zhetygen-Korgas to China in 2011. According to the company, these projects will significantly increase the competitiveness of the economy through the implementation of the Kazakhstan's export and transit potential.

A new plant "Tulpar-Talgo" for the production of modern passenger cars was launched in Astana and a freight cars plant was commissioned in Ekibastuz in 2011.
