Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, July 25 / Trend H. Hasanov /

The fourth meeting of the joint intergovernmental Turkmen-Tajik commission for trade, economic and scientific, technical cooperation is being held in Dushanbe until July 27, an official Turkmen source said on Tuesday.

Ashgabat and Dushanbe are considering priorities for trade and economic cooperation in such sectors as energy, agriculture, transport and communication taking into account geographic location and the transit potential of both countries.

Tajikistan is experiencing a shortage of energy resources, a major supplier of which in Central Asia is Turkmenistan. The existing transport infrastructure allows Ashgabat to export electricity to Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asian countries.

Following the recent cessation of gas supplies from Uzbekistan, Dushanbe expects to gain access to Turkmenistan's energy resources, including natural fuel.

Earlier it was reported that Tajikistan wants to increase oil product supplies to the country from Turkmenistan. So far in this area the country depends on imports from Russia which has increased export duty several times. This in turn led to a jump in prices on the domestic food market, spurring inflation growth.
