President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov signed a decree 'On the design and construction of bridges over roads', official Turkmen source said on Tuesday.
According to the document, 78 bridges will be built, including in the direction of the Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi - 62 and Ashgabat-Mary - 16 bridges.
At a recent government meeting the Turkmen leader called attention to the fact that "Turkmenistan is an active participant in regional and international transport corridors."
He noted that this project is of great importance in increasing the economic efficiency of road transport within Turkmenistan, as well as on international routes.
'In this context the head of state noted that innovative solutions and high-tech, cutting edge developments, achievements of scientific thought and technological progress will be required in order to ensure the operation of bridges at the highest level and to upgrade the highway network', the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.
It is reported that the President also instructed provision of the construction of the concrete main intercity highways, since asphalt roads cannot withstand the very hot climatic conditions of Turkmenistan.
The country's highways must be built with high quality and in full conformity with international standards, Berdymuhamedov said and gave instructions to develop a work plan, according to the road sector development programme for the successful implementation of which the State will provide the necessary financial support.
Turkmenistan plans to completely reconstruct the network of trunk roads and build new high speed highways with the entire necessary road infrastructure by 2014. Their total length will be about 1700 kilometres.
