Iran to boost electricity exports to Turkey

Iran will increase its electricity exports to Turkey, Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad said on Tuesday.Tehran currently exports 500 MW of electricity to Ankara, the ISNA News Agency quoted Behzad as saying.

In an effort to diversify its destination markets, Iran plans to export electricity to Europe and Africa, he said.Tehran had previously agreed to increase its electricity exports to neighbouring Afghanistan.

Iranian Minister of Energy MajidNamjou and Afghan Minister of Energy and Water Mohammad EsmailKhanransigned anMoU on January 28.

Through this, Tehran agreed to increase its daily electricity exports to Kabul by up to 164 MW.
Iran exported 10.166 gig watt hours of electricity to neighbouring countries from the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20) until February 19.

The amount shows a 30.3 per cent increase in comparison to the same period of the previous year, the IRIB News Agency reported.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan (also Nakhchivan Autonomous republic), Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.

The managing director of Iran power generation transmission and distribution management company (TAVANIR), HomayounHaeri, announced on December 15 that Iran currently trades 12.3 gig watt hours of electricity with neighbouring countries.
Iran plans to boost its electricity cooperation with the Persian Gulf region's countries, the IRNA News Agency quoted HomayounHaeri as saying.

Haeri had said in January that Iran will exchange up to 15 billion kilowatt hours (BkWh) of electricity with its neighbouring countries by the end of the current calendar year (March 19, 2012), up 50 per cent year on year.

Tehran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.

Iran will inaugurate some new power plants by the end of current Iranian calendar year (March 20) in order to boost its power generation capacity by 2000 MW, the deputy energy minister said last week.

So far, some 3000 MW have been added to the nation's power generation capacity from the beginning of the current calendar year, the ISNA News Agency quoted Mohammad Behzad as saying.

Based on the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan, Iran should annually add 5000 MW to its power generation capacity.Iran's installed power generation capacity is currently about 67 gig watts (GW).

The country plans to boost its electricity generation capacity to reach 73GW, by the end of the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (March 2016).
