Qatar is interested in investing in Turkey's construction sector, a source in the Turkish government told Trend Jan. 23.

The source noted that Qatar’s investors are expected to invest in the construction of residential areas along the new shipping canal in Istanbul.

"Qatari investments are planned to be made in the construction of residential areas on a 4.6 million-square-meter-territory along Istanbul’s shipping canal," the source said.

According to the preliminary estimates, the cost of building a shipping canal in Istanbul is estimated at 60 billion Turkish lira and this project has already received an environmental safety certificate.

Meanwhile, 6,000 people will be involved in the canal construction.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed the intention to implement the Istanbul Canal project in 2011.

The depth and width of the Istanbul Canal will be 25 meters and 400 meters, respectively.
