Farmers of Kazakhstan’s Kostanay region have completed the harvesting campaign, deputy head of the regional agriculture department Sembay Sagandykov told Kazinform.

"Every year has its special features regarding the harvesting campaign. Overall, we are completing this year well. The yield is higher than in previous years, despite the fact that the sown area has decreased," said Sagandykov.

He specified that this year 5,214 million tons of grain were collected in the Kostanay region. The average yield was 12.8 centners per hectare, while in 2017 the figure was 12.5.

Sagandykov also touched upon the issue of the region’s grain purchase by Kazakhstan’s Food Contract Corporation.

"Perhaps the state purchase of grain will not be announced, because, compared to last year, the prices are reasonable. However, many farmers still do not sell grain with the hope that prices will rise," he said.

It is worth noting that this year, as much as 89 percent of the grain area in the Kostanay region was sown with certified seeds of higher fertility, 93 percent of which are seeds of class 1 and 2.

More than 9,600 combines, including 3,000 of high performance, and 23,000 tractors took part in harvesting this year, as well as 3,000 swathers, about 8,000 trucks, 19,000 tractor trailers and other machinery.
