Despite disasters and drought, Iran's olive production is expected to reach 90,000 tons in the current Iranian year (started March 21), Iran's Young Journalists Club website reported citing the member of Iranian Olive Council Nadir Jalalat.

Despite cold weather in Golestan, Semnan, Markazi Provinces and drought in Fars Province, there will not be significant decrease in production compared to last year, Jalalat said.

"Last year's increased canned olive production encouraged farmers to produce olive oil. Last year about 60,000-70,000 tons of total olive output (90,000 tons) were canned and the rest were used in olive oil production. But in the current year about 50 percent of the total olive output is expected to be used in olive oil production," he added.

Iranians, on average, consume 16-17 liters of olive oil per year.
