By Kamala Mammadli – Trend:

The construction of a dual-gauge railway line has been launched in the logistics center of Turkey’s eastern Kars province, Trend reports referring to the Turkish media outlets.

The center is important for the uninterrupted transportation of goods from Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan via Turkey through the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway to Europe.

The logistics center will be equipped with gauges with a width of 1,435 millimeters and 1,520 millimeters. This will allow trains from both sides to supply goods to Kars.

The goods will be supplied from Asia, Russia and post-Soviet countries to Europe through this system.

An agreement on the creation of the logistics center was signed on July 19, 2017 during the visit of Head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Javid Gurbanov to the Kars province.

On October 30, 2017, a solemn ceremony on the occasion of the opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was held at the Baku International Sea Trade Port.

The BTK railway was constructed on the basis a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement.

The railway’s peak capacity will be 17 million tons of cargo per year. At an initial stage, this figure will be one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
