Uzbekistan sends first batch of export coal to Pakistan

Uzbekistan has sent to Pakistan a pilot shipment of 300 tons of coal mined at Shargunkumir and Boysunkumir coal deposits, Trend reports via Uzbek media.

The first cargo was shipped from the Darband railway station in Surkhandarya region.

Shargun is the richest coal deposit in Uzbekistan. Its reserves are estimated to exceed 33 million tons.

Recently, representatives of Uzbekistan Railways announced that they intend to bring the production of coal at Shargunkumir to one million tons per year (150,000 tons in 2017).

A consortium of Chinese companies within China Railway Tunnel Group and China Coal Technology & Engineering Group Corp was engaged in working on the field, which started in September 2017.

The companies were to carry out the tasks of cleaning the piled up old ten mines with a total length of 1,500 meters and to drill 2,227 meters of the tunnel to extract additional volumes of coal.

The total cost of the project exceeds $105.5 million.
