What Uzbekistan's strategic plan for the textile industry has achieved over the past three years is very impressive, Laurent Aucouturier, managing consultant at Gherzi International Consulting Organization told Trend.
"The number and size of greenfield textile projects, as well as the speed of their implementation, illustrate the new dynamism initiated by the national cluster strategy," said Aucouturier.
He said that very few countries have been able to instill such a new and spontaneous dynamism into their domestic textile sector.
Since 2017, the Uzbek government has put in place reforms aiming at supporting the restructuring and development of the cotton and textile sector in the country.
"The iconic measure is without any doubt the so-called “textile cluster strategy”, a quite unique model of textile industrialization promoting a complete vertical integration from cotton farming to finished goods under the same commercial and legal entities," said Aucouturier.
According to him, a number of countries have dreamed to strongly connect their cotton production with the local transformation of their fibers in order to capture a better portion of value addition. However viable economical models have been very difficult to identify and justify such as the Uzbek ones.
"Uzbekistan seems to have found its own modus operandi. As of today, this strategy has borne fruit. Massive investments have been implemented or are in the pipeline, jobs have been created, the old state-run cotton system has been revamped and Uzbekistan is on the way to become a visible international textile-producing platform", Aucouturier said.
"As for the quality of Uzbek products, they are in line with the requirements of the markets in which the Uzbekistan is currently exposed to (e.g. Russia and CIS markets). Sooner or later, significant improvement will be requested in order to meet international brands’ demands," said representative of Gherzi International Consulting Organization, Laurent Aucouturier.
