Kazakhstan sees annual decrease in cargo transportation volume amid COVID-19

A total of 381 million tons of cargo was transported in Kazakhstan by all means of transport in Dec. 2020, which is 4.6 percent less than in Dec. 2019, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Statistics Committee.

In turn, the volume of cargo transported over 2020 amounted to 3.9 billion tons, which is 6.6 percent less year-on-year compared to 4.2 billion tons over the same period of last year.

Thus, the majority of the cargo was transported in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region. The volume of cargo transported in the region amounted to 74.6 million tons in December and 738.2 million tons over 2020, which is 9.2 percent and 14.5 percent less than during the same period last year, respectively.

Karaganda region is followed by the East Kazakhstan region with 61.6 million tons transported in Dec. 2020 (a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to Dec. 2019). The volume of cargo transported in the region during the reporting period amounted to 648.8 million tons, which compared to 662.1 million during the same period last year, indicates a 2-percent decrease.

Kostanay region takes third place country-wide by the cargo transported in Dec. 2020 (31.4 million tons, up by 14 percent). The volume of cargo transported in the region over 2020 amounted to 311.3 million tons, which is 2.7 percent less than during the same period last year (320.1 million tons).

The least cargo volume was transported in the West Kazakhstan region. The transported cargo volume stood at 4.32 million tons of cargo in Dec. 2020, which is 7.6 percent more than in Dec. 2019. The volume of cargo transported over 2020 was 41.2 million tons, which is 3.3 percent more year-on-year.
