Low price for wheat purchase guarantee would create problems for purchasing farmers' surplus production in new Iranian year (starts March 21, 2021), said the head of Agriculture Organization of Tehran Province.

"The rate for wheat purchase guarantee is 40,000 rial (about 95 cents)per kilo but the current price of the product is currently 70,000 rial (about $1.6) per kilo. The purchase guarantee law requires review," said Ayoub Fesahat, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"The country would face problem in purchasing surplus wheat from farmers in new Iranian year(starts March 21, 2021) if the rate does not increase. Expanding cities towards farmlands is the main issue of framers in Tehran province that could lead to a major challenge. Illegal construction in farmlands could easily destroy the production texture," he said.

Based on the Agriculture Ministry’s data, Iranian farmers produced nearly 14.5 million tons of wheat in the last Iranian year (started March 21, 2019) that was 1.2 million tons more than the figure for its preceding year.

"About 44 percent of agricultural products in Tehran province which is 2.4 million tons are annually produced by Varamin, Pishva, Qarchak, and Pakdasht counties. These parts would use modern technologies in agriculture and livestock farming yet water shortage limited their capacities," he noted.

Fesahat went on to say that the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in the south of Tehran and transferring sewage water from the southeast of Tehran would partly solve the issue.

"Launch of the wastewater treatment plant in the south of Tehran, building a terminal in Pakdasht to export flower and plant, stabilization of quicksand in the south of Varamin and properly use the capacity of the 13 million population market in the province are priorities of agriculture sector in the southeast of Tehran," he added.
