Iran catches about 30,000 tons of tuna per year in distant waters from its coasts, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Parviz Mohebbi said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran.
The deputy chairman said that Iran is the country, which has the largest number of ships engaged in fishing in distant waters.
Mohebbi added that the fishing in distant waters is important in terms of preventing depletion of reserves in coastal waters.
“The distribution of shares and other issues related to fishing in distant waters is carried out by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission. It is very important to strengthen Iran's position in this commission,” he said.
The official noted that the membership fee in this commission is determined by the size of the country's fishing. Iran's annual membership fee in this commission amounts to $200,000-230,000.
