Georgia increases export of hazelnuts

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 23

Georgia has exported 7,200 tons of hazelnuts worth $31.3 million since August 1, Trend reports citing the press service of the country's Ministry of Agriculture.

The volume of exports of hazelnuts during the reporting period increased by 2,100 tons (42 percent) compared to the volume of exports in the same period of 2020/2021, and the value of exports increased by $2.8 million (10 percent).

According to the ministry, Georgian hazelnuts are mainly exported to European countries, as well as neighboring states.

Top ten importing countries of Georgian hazelnuts: Italy - 3,662 tons, Germany - 945 tons, Armenia - 443 tons, Spain - 411 tons, Czech Republic - 263 tons, Poland - 209 tons, Ukraine - 171 tons, Iraq - 120 tons, Belarus - 113 tons, Lithuania - 110 tons.

Some 104 tons have been exported to Russia since August 1 of this year.

Mass harvesting of hazelnuts began in Georgia in early August. The regions of Samegrelo and Guria in western Georgia were the first to traditionally start harvesting, later they were joined by the region of Kakheti and others. According to the ministry, this year it is expected to collect 65,000-70,000 tons of hazelnuts, the export potential of which is $150 million.
