CONFERENCE ON ROLE OF POLICY IN COUNTRIES WITH TRANSITION ECONOMY FOR ACHIEVEMENT UN MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS STARTS

International conference on role of policy in the countries with transition economy for achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals (UNCTAD) started in Baku on Tuesday. Attending the event organized by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Economic Development and the UNCTAD are around 100 representatives from 20 countries with transition economy.

Mehman Tagiyev, the representative of the President’s Apparat, read out the letter by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, where the he underlined readiness to protect consumer rights and expressed hope in continuation of successful cooperation and assistance by the UN.

According to Farhad Aliyev, the Minister of Economic Development, said that the countries with transition economy have common development peculiarities. He also stressed the reduction of the poverty level in the country from 49% to 40%, which will help to avoid the �Dutch syndrome’. He stated that the long-term strategy on oil incomes management assisted to effective and transparent management of oil and gas incomes under international standards.

Filipp Brusik, the head of the UNCTAD Competitive and Consumer Policy, noted that the program aimed at solution of several tasks such as obtaining of equal free access to elementary education for all society levels, reduction of childish death-rate in Africa and all over the world, struggle with malaria, HIV-AIDS, access to medicaments.

The conference will last till Wednesday.
