A project to transport liquefied natural gas from Azerbaijan to Georgia, Romania and other European countries will destroy the existing energy resource transportation monopoly, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said after meeting with his Romanian counterpart Traian Basesku in Bucharest.

"So far, only the big players were engaged in energy resource transportation, but Europe needs diversification," Saakashvili said.

He stressed that the project to transport liquefied natural gas from the Caspian region to Europe is realistic and well developed, and will bring results before the Nabucco gas project.

Saakashvili stressed that gas supplies may start this year.

"This means that AGRI will start working before Nabucco and earlier than other routes," he said.

Romania, Azerbaijan and Georgia signed a memorandum on liquefied gas transportation in Bucharest April 13.
