Shah Deniz shareholders decide on export route of Azerbaijani gas to Europe

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 26 / Trend /

Consortium for the development of gas field in Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea did not select Nabucco West pipeline as a route for transportation of its gas to Europe, the message of OMV company, which is a shareholder of Nabucco, said.

The second route, which was considered alongside with Nabucco, was Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), but neither the TAP, nor Shah Deniz made an official statement about the choice of this project.

At the same time, the Government of Greece, through the territory of which the TAP passes, welcomed the selection of this route.

As the ANSA agency reported, the delegation, which includes the representatives of the management of SOCAR and BP Azerbaijan will visit Greece on Wednesday to inform the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras about the final decision of shareholders of Shah Deniz.

The sides are expected to sign a corresponding agreement.

The TAP project is designed to transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania and across the Adriatic Sea to the south of Italy and further into Western Europe. Gas to be produced during the second stage of Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field development is considered as the main source for TAP.

TAP's initial pipeline capacity will be 10 billion cubic metres per year, but is easily expandable to 20 billion cubic metres per year. TAP's shareholders are AXPO of Switzerland (42.5 percent), Norway's Statoil (42.5 percent) and E.ON Ruhrgas of Germany (15 percent).

Nabucco West provides the construction of 1,300 kilometers of pipeline (Bulgaria - 412 km, Romania - 469 km, Hungary - 384 km, Austria - 47 km) from the Turkish-Bulgarian border to the Austrian Baumgarten.
