Iran, Armenia discuss boosting gas-for-electricity trade

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran and Armenia discussed about increasing Iranian gas exports to Armenia in return for increasing electricity imports from Armenia.

Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh met with Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Yervand Zakharyan in Tehran on October 4.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Zanganeh said that details of the trade rise will be discussed by the two countries, Shana news agency reported on October 4.

In 2004, the Armenian government initiated construction of Iran-Armenia gas pipeline.

The pipeline started operating in 2007.

Armenia uses Iranian gas for generating electricity, which is sent to Iran - 3 kilowatt/hour for 1 cubic meter of natural gas. Under the agreement, Iran will send 36 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Armenia for 20 years. The terms of the agreement can be prolonged for five years and gas import can be increased to 47 billion cubic meters.
