BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 2. China's experience in pollution control can help accelerate the adoption of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the decarbonization process, Ma Jun, Founding Director, of the Institute of Public C Environmental Affairs (IPE), Beijing, China, said, Trend reports.
He made the remark in a video message at a panel discussion on “: Supporting SMEs in the Green Transition” held on the third day of the international conference at the Climate Action Week in Baku.
“China has been helping SMEs decarbonize in recent years. A recent global stock market analysis showed a large gap to close as extreme weather events increase worldwide. Large multinational firms and financial institutions have pledged to carbon neutrality, but SMEs face major obstacles. They are crucial to global supply systems and often emit SCOPE 3 emissions. We believe China's ten years of pollution control experience can accelerate this process,” emphasized Ma Jun.
According to him, the bedrock of all these initiatives has been the widespread rollout of data monitoring and transparency, paving the way for the BlueMap database, which keeps tabs on the performance of around 16 million companies doing business in China.
“In the face of climate change, we believe it is important to start by building the infrastructure to collect carbon emissions data. We have built a national data infrastructure that covers not only the country as a whole but also individual provinces and cities. This also helps government agencies implement mandatory data disclosure requirements, systematize corporate emissions figures, and make them more accessible,” he added.
