Georgian Railway increases cargo transportation

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 23

The cargo turnover of the Georgian Railway (GR) increased by 7.3 percent in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year and amounted to 2.9 million tons, Trend reports via the GR.

From January through March of this year, GR's revenues from cargo transportation amounted to 86.8 million lari ($25.2 million), which is 14 percent more than last year.

According to the company, the results for the first quarter of 2021 are a record for the last six years.

As reported, container traffic has also grown. In the first quarter, the growth amounted to 19,000 TEU (3.5 percent). As a result, the company's revenues increased by 8 percent and amounted to 7.3 million lari ($2.1 million).

Transportation of oil and oil products for the reporting period increased by 33 percent - up to 1.1 million tons. The company's revenues from the transportation of petroleum products in the first quarter amounted to 39.7 million lari ($11.5 million), which is 42 percent more than from January through March 2020.

The state-owned company JSC "Georgian Railways" currently owns both the railways and all the trains, and sets tariffs for the transportation of passengers and freight.

According to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, rail freight traffic in 2020 increased from 10.9 to 11.1 million tons. The number of transported passengers was 800,000 people.
