Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed prospects for the development of transport and logistics infrastructure, access to new markets through the transport corridors of South Asia and the South Caucasus, Trend reports with reference to UZ DAILY.
The discussions took place during the meeting of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The issue of creating an international transport and transit corridor in accordance with the Ashgabat Agreement was discussed.
The presidents agreed to hold a regular meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission and the Business Council in the near future to identify new growth points, prepare promising projects and agreements.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Uzbek-Turkmen relations are showing development, the presidents said.
The Ashgabat Agreement was signed between Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The purpose of the agreement is to achieve the continuation of reliable and uninterrupted cargo transportation between the participating states.
The agreement contributes to increasing the speed of cargo transportation and transit in order to optimize transport costs, as well as to simplify and harmonize official documents and procedures.
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan cooperate in various spheres. The trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan amounted to $166.9 million from January through April 2021.
During the reporting period, the import of Turkmen products to Uzbekistan amounted to $ 130.5 million.
Meanwhile, exports from Uzbekistan to Turkmenistan amounted to $ 36.5 million.
