A National Iranian Gas Company project on annual production of 800 tons of mercaptan, used to add an unpleasant odor to natural gas, will become operational in two years.

The research project on producing mercaptan is advancing well and is at the comprehensive engineering phase, the iribnews.ir website quoted research and technology director of the gas company Saeed Pakseresht as saying.

Iran uses 500 tons of the odorous gas and will be able to save more than $26 million annually by producing it domestically and exporting the volume it doesn't need, Pakseresht said.
