Iran's position stands as the world's third top builder of dams due to its vast experience
As they prepare to sign a letter of cooperation, Majid Namjoo, Iran's energy minister, met with his Syrian counterpart last night to discuss what areas the two nations should focus on, Mehr news agency reports.
"Since Iran became self-sufficient in building dams last year with the completion of the Karun 4, it can help Syria, "said Mr Namjoo who added "that some Iranian companies are currently working in Syria but that participation has to grow."
Building dams, irrigation systems and sewer systems are some of the subjects the two ministers discussed. The two allies will also evaluate building joint factories in Syria to meet water demands and sewerage systems.
The Syrian Minister announced that any Iranian company wishing to invest in the projects will be supported by the Damascus government.
Task forces from both countries will work on issues related to the cooperation agreement and Iran will also train Syrian technicians.
Syria has been gripped by a popular uprising for more than a year. During that time Iran has remained a staunch ally while the world community has condemned Damascus for its actions.
