It is expected that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will announce Iran's step-by-step program on taking measures in response to the withdrawal of the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) during a live television program on May 8, 2019, an official close to the JCPOA Supervisory Board told ISNA, Trend reports.

According to the official, the measures are within the scope of Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA. He added that the issue of Iran's withdrawal from the nuclear issue was not being put forward yet.

"It is Iran's first step to react to the resumption of some of the nuclear activities that had been suspended within the framework of the nuclear deal, to the reduction of some of Iran's obligations, the withdrawal of the US from the nuclear deal, and the failure of European countries to fulfill their obligations," he said.

The JCPOA, signed between Iran and the P5+1 group (US, UK, Russia, China, France and Germany), was put in force in January 2016. The US announced its withdrawal from the deal In May 2018 and imposed sanctions on Iran in November of the same year.

Under Article 26 of the JCPOA, “The U.S. Administration […] will refrain from imposing new nuclear-related sanctions. Iran has stated that it will treat such a re-introduction or re-imposition of the sanctions […], or such an imposition of new nuclear-related sanctions, as grounds to cease performing its commitments under this JCPOA in whole or in part.”

Under Article 36 of the JCPOA, “If Iran believed that any or all of the E3/EU+3 [i.e. the P5+1 group] were not meeting their commitments under this JCPOA, Iran could refer the issue to the Joint Commission for resolution.”
