Bahrain's Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Khalifa filed an appeal against Iran's interference in the internal affairs of Bahrain during a meeting with the UN secretary general, Bahrain News Agency reported Friday.
"Iran has chosen and continues on the path of escalation in relations with neighboring countries, trying to spread its influence on them by interfering with the internal affairs and using extremist elements in these countries for their purposes," the minister said was quoted assaying by the agency.
The minister said that Bahrain still wanted to normalize relations with Iran, but only in case Tehran took "positive steps" to put an end to interference with Bahrain's home affairs and adhered to the principles of good-neighborliness and mutual respect.
The previous day, Bahrain's Foreign Ministry withdrew its ambassador to Iran and declared the Iranian charge d'affaires in Manama persona non grata amid accusations of Iran meddling in Bahrain's internal affairs.
