Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 4 /Trend, M.Aliyev /

Azerbaijan will raise the question of complexity and importance of the Syrian issue at the UN Security Council, deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee Aydin Mirzazade told Trend.

"155 countries, including members of the Arab League, voted for the election of Azerbaijan as a member of the UN Security Council. The Arab world believes that Azerbaijan will protect its interests in the Council", said Mirzazade.

Azerbaijan has its own position on Syria, which coincides with the position of the Arab League, Mirzazade said.

Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo, which were elected to the organization for 2012-2013 during the elections held at the General Assembly in October 2011, assumed their authorities as the UNSC non-permanent members on Jan.1. They replaced Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria at the UNSC Council, whose two-year term expired on Dec.31, 2011.

According to him, Azerbaijan, as well as several other countries, is against the bloodshed in Syria, and supports a peaceful solution to the problem.

"Even taking into account the position of the five permanent UN Security Council members, Azerbaijan's position is equally important. Azerbaijan is not only a new member of the Council, it is one of the regional states, and although it has no common borders with Syria, it is a part of the region where these processes are taking place", he said.

It is an honour and responsibility for Azerbaijan to participate in the meetings of UN Security Council, Mirzazade added.

"From now on Azerbaijan's position will frequently attract the attention of the world's leading media", he said.
