Minister: Turkey will further help Georgia integrate into NATO

Turkey is assisting Georgia in its integration into NATO and this support will also continue in the future, Turkish Defence Minister Ismet Yilmaz, who is on a visit to Georgia, said on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Yilmaz met with his Georgian counterpart Dmitry Shashkin.

The meeting was held behind closed doors, after which the ministers issued a press statement.

Shashkin said Turkey has always been a great friend of Georgia and helped it in its army development.

"Turkey has always supported Georgia's territorial integrity and provided support to its army from the technical and training point of view," he said.

According to Yildiz, Turkey is always ready to help the Georgian side in the development and equipment of the army. He said the Georgian militaries serve in Turkey's area of responsibility in Afghanistan.

"We discussed coordination of our actions in Afghanistan and issues related to the military training of Georgian troops," he stressed.

Yildiz underlined that his country supports Georgia's aspiration to NATO and is providing all possible assistance.
