Britain says "legitimate demands" must be answered in Egypt

British Foreign Secretary William Hague Friday urged the Egyptian government to heed the "legitimate demands" of protestors to avoid further violence or "attempted revolution", dpa reported.

In a pooled interview for broadcasting stations, Hague said it was currently "impossible to predict what the outcome will be of a long period of disorder, of violence or attempted revolution."

However, the "right response" to the protests, whether in Egypt, Tunisia or elsewhere, was for governments to "understand the grievances and deal with them in an evolutionary way and by bringing necessary reforms."

Legitimate demands for economic development and a "more open and flexible political system" needed to be heeded, said Hague, who has recently visited the Middle East.
