US troops leave Iraq for Kuwait under pullout deal

Hundreds of trucks, carrying US armoured vehicles and military hardware, were leaving Iraq for Kuwait, government officials said on Wednesday.

"The US forces have already left 485 posts and military bases," said the spokesman for the Iraqi government Ali al-Dabagh.

"This represents a successful implementation of the obligations between the two countries," he added, DPA reported.

On Friday, US President Barack Obama said all US troops would leave Iraq by the end of the year, after talks between Washington and Baghdad on keeping some soldiers in the country longer failed.

"Only 20 positions and military bases manned by US troops are yet to be handed over to the Iraqi government," said al-Dabagh.

The Iraqi government has said it will not allow the US to keep military bases in the country after pullout. However, Baghdad has left the door open for recruiting US experts to train Iraqi forces.

US troops invaded Iraq in March of 2003.
