Success of peace process to depend on Middle East Quartet: chief Palestinian negotiator

Palestinians hope the Middle East Quartet will play a constructive role in holding the parties accountable for honoring their commitments in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, Chief Palestinian Negotiator in the talks with Israel Saeb Erakat, the negotiating committee released.

Erakat said the success of the peace process will depend on the effective ability of the Quartet to oversee and report on the successes and failures of both sides in carrying out their obligations.

"We expect everyone to honor their commitments; this is the only way to return credibility to the peace process," Erakat said. "We are not talking about Palestinian pre-conditions but about both Israeli and Palestinian obligations under the Quartet-sponsored Road Map."

Erekat added Israel's outposts in the West Bank hinder the development of the Palestinian administration's economy and activities of public institutions which are necessary to establish an independent Palestinian state.

At the meeting with U.S. Special Envoy on Middle East Richard Mitchell in Ramallah, Erakat said the peace process needs to have a framework, as many obligations of the Road Map have not been fulfilled.
