Acting on reports from local residents, the authorities found four ammunitions rounds and an explosive device in Triomphe Square in the upmarket district of Heliopolis, about three kilometers from the home of Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak.

The district is also home to many churches and military barracks and buildings.

Triomphe Square, which is a busy commercial area open until the late hours of the night, is not a tourist area.

Egypt has been periodically shaken by attacks targeting tourists, including an attack on an old bazaar in Cairo in April 2005.
