Turkey will ban the sale of psychotropic drugs without a prescription, Turkish Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu said Sept. 16, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.

"This is connected with the tightening of the fight against drug addiction," he said.

The minimum age of drug addicts in the country is 13 years old, the maximum age - 65 years old, the average age - 36 years old, the Turkish Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction said.

Drug addicts among the Turkish population aged 15-24 account for 2.9 percent, 25-44 year old drug addicts - 2.8 percent, 45-64 year old drug addicts - 2.3 percent, the report says.

There are 22 treatment centers in the country. Around 5,214 drug addicts were treated in Turkey in 2013.

About 18 percent of those arrested in Turkey accounted for 23, 738 drug dealers.

Around 316,466 people were arrested for the use and sale of drugs in Istanbul over the last four years.
