Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 16
By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Sooner or later the EU will understand the importance of Turkey's accession to this union, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was quoted Jan. 16 by Haber7 TV channel as saying.

He said that Turkey does not intend to ask to join the EU.

Davutoglu said that there is no unity among the EU countries.

The official negotiations on Turkey's accession to the EU were resumed in 2005.

"Turkey's accession to the EU is no longer attractive for the country's citizens," Turkish deputy prime minister, Bulent Arinc, said earlier.

He said that previously 75 percent of Turkey's population supported the country's accession to the EU, however now this figure stands at 20 percent.

According to the country's officials, Turkey fulfilled 65 percent of its commitments to the EU for accession to this organization.

Turkish Minister for EU Affairs Volkan Bozkir said the talks between Turkey and the EU can't continue in the format demanded by the organization. Furthermore, he said that democracy in Turkey is at a higher level than in some European countries.
