French Senator: Presidential election in Azerbaijan important for country and region’s future
Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 3 / Trend A. Badalova /
The upcoming presidential election in Azerbaijan is very important not only for the future of the country, but for the region, French MP Nathalie Goulet told Trend on Thursday.
"Azerbaijan plays an important role in ensuring stability in the region," she said on the eve of her visit to Azerbaijan.
Nathalie Goulet will visit Azerbaijan from October 6-11 as the head of the French Senate's delegation of observers at the presidential election.
According to her, besides the delegation consisting of five senators, six mayors of French cities will visit Naftalan.
The presidential election in Azerbaijan will be held on October 9. The previous one was held on October 15, 2008.
Azerbaijan holds its presidential election every five years.
"It is very important to be able to check the conditions of this important election ourselves," Goulet said. She added that the observers will fulfil their commitments to be neutral without any prejudgment.
According to the senator, she was able to see Azerbaijan's tremendous progress achieved under the leadership of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
"I believe in Azerbaijan's progress in the long route towards democracy," she said.
"It's not an easy way regarding the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," she said.
"Azerbaijan deserves more attention and a better understanding," Goulet said.
