The first European Games in Baku will make an important contribution to the development of sport in Europe, Baku 2015 Coordination Commission Chairman Spyros Capralos said June 28 at the final press conference dedicated to the Games in Baku.
"The first European Games were grandiose and well organized," said Capralos. "We have witnessed the quality sport."
He said that various innovations were used in these Games. "The program of the European Games included new disciplines, via which we have tried to demonstrate the grandeur of these Games," said Capralos.
The chairman of the commission went on to add that representatives of 42 countries of the 50 participating ones won medals at the first European Games. "Of course, this will make an important contribution to the development of sport in Europe," said Capralos.
He also expressed confidence that the closing ceremony of the European Games will be grandiose. "The opening ceremony was grandiose, I am confident that the closing ceremony of the Games will be just as grandiose, said Capralos.
The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.
More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
