Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 5 / Trend , S.Aliyev/

Azerbaijani Court detained Russian dry-cargo ship Sarmat-1. Sarmat-1 suffered a disaster 30 miles from Baku in late 2008, Azerbaijan State Maritime Administration said on Feb. 5.

The vessel was detained, as the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (Socar) Caspian Sea Oil Fleet requires the ship-owner to pay compensation for rescuing the ship. "This is a normal practice," said the administration.

Repair on the ship has been completed. The vessel has been examined and is ready to be released into the sea. However, that is impossible until the financial issue is resolved.

A technical malfunction in the steering compartment caused an accident on the Sarmat-1.

Other injuries resulting from the accident were eliminated during repair in Baku.

Astrakhan Rescue Coordination Center reported on distress on the Sarmat-1 on Dec. 15. Sarmat-1 was built in 1986. The accident did not left victims.

The vessel was sailing from Astrakhan, Russia, to Anzali, Iran, with a cargo of lumber and metal products (1,750 tons). The steering machine came out of order because of a storm.
