Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 March / Trend corr. I.Alizadeh / The standing Azerbaijani Parliamentary Commission on Regional issues approved rules which provide unification of small municipalities for more efficient work.
"The municipalities may join through consensus of 25% of electorates," Arif Rahimzadeh, chairman of the Standing Parliamentary Commission on Regional Issues, stated on 18 March.
There are 2,757 municipalities and 150 of them are located in various regions of Azerbaijan.
According to the chairman, there are municipalities in Azerbaijan which have only five members. "Such municipalities cannot have an efficient functioning," he said.
The changes into the Bill on 'Status of municipalities' and 'Joint activity, unification, separation and cancellation of municipalities', which provide unification of municipalities, were approved during the meeting of the Commission. The document was proposed for submission to the Parliament for consideration.
