Azerbaijan’s Opposition Party to Provide High Attendance during Demonstrations

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 April / Trend corr S. Ilhamgizi/ Sulhaddin Akbar, Chairman of administration of Azerbaijan's opposition party Musavat, believes that the party will be able to provide high attendance during the demonstration scheduled for 4 May. "Musavat party has good social basis and relies on its supporters during demonstrations," Akbar said to Trend on 30 April.

Governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) believes that Musavat's demonstrations will have no result.

"Musavat's demonstration will either not take place or will have no result, because the social basis of the party is weak," Mubariz Gurbanli, Deputy Executive Secretary of NAP, said to journalists on 30 April.

Musavat is going to hold a demonstration in Baku on 4 May and to demand prevention of price hike in the country, ensuring of property rights of the citizens, free elections.

According to Akbar, the authorities are well aware of Musavat's high social basis. He said that the authorities do not put obstacles for holding mass rallies by the opposition because they are aware of its strength and support from the public.

Opposition Musavat party was founded at the beginning of 1992. Its leader, Isa Gambar, was the speaker of Azerbaijani Parliament between 1992 and 1993. In 2003, he ran for presidency. The party is represented by 5 MPs in the Parliament.
