Azerbaijani governing party confident of success in referendum campaign

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 13/ Trend , J. Babayeva/ Azerbaijani governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) says its popular support and experience allows it to launch large campaigns any time. 

"The referendum initiative group launched by the party acts very effectively. The party uses all its resources for the campaign. The party is able to hold successful campaign," deputy speaker of the parliament and NAP Board of Directors member Bahar Muradova said in her interview with the party's official website. 

The referendum groups will launch campaign on Feb. 18. According to schedule by the Central Election Commission, the campaign will end at 24:00 on March 16.

Azerbaijan will hold referendum vote on amendments to the Constitution on March 18.

Thus far, the CEC has registered New Azerbaijan, City, Progress, Law and Democracy and Civil Society initiative groups. Prosperous village, Free Speech, Azerbaijan People's Republic and National Independence initiative groups were not registered.

The election constituencies have registered 124 initiative groups.

The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

Muradova said broad discussions will be held during the referendum campaign. "Those who support or oppose amendments have established their own campaign groups. I think those who support amendments have stronger arguments. The referendum will be helped on a high level. Majority of population will vote for amendments," she said.
