Absence of agreements on legal assistance between Azerbaijan  and Islamic countries complicates fighting with crime: Justice Minister

Absence of agreements between Azerbaijan and many member-states of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) about legal assistance, extradition, exchange of legal information complicates conducting mutual legal assistance in fighting crime, Azerbaijani Justice Minister Fikret Mammadov stated to an OIC conference of heads of law-enforcement bodies in Baku on Apr. 22.

The conference of the heads of the law enforcement agencies of the Organization of the Islamic Conference began in Baku on April 21-22.

The conference aims to identify main directions of mutual cooperation among the OIC member states.

Transnational organized crime, international terrorism, extremism, aggressive separatism, trafficking of arms, narcotics, psychotropic drugs and their substitutes, human trafficking, illegal migration, legalization of funds and property obtained through crime, financing of terrorism and cooperation on combating corruption stand on the OIC conference's agenda.

The conference also aims to develop major cooperation directions in a new format within the OIC. Senior delegations of the OIC member states and representatives of international organizations are attending the conference. The conference of the heads of the law enforcement agencies of the Organization of the Islamic Conference is expected to end with Baku Declaration.

Azerbaijan has signed agreements on legal assistance, extradition, exchange of information, as well as interdepartmental agreements with several OIC member-states, including Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Turkmenistan, UAE and Jordan, and is carrying out fruitful cooperation with them, the minister said.

The minister said drafts of appropriate bilateral documents are prepared to sign with Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Algeria. Cooperation in fighting crime is mainly based on legal documents and Azerbaijan joined all major institutes regulating cooperation in legal field - UN, the Council of Europe, CIS and other international organizations.
