First media conference of Eastern Partnership member countries began its work in Riga on the theme "Role of Media in the Eastern Partnership."

The role of free media in building democracy, the basics of professional journalism, the role of the state in ensuring freedom of expression will be discussed at the event.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic, Former President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks participate in the opening session of the conference.

The conference is organized by the chairmanship of Latvia in the EU.

The Eastern Partnership program is one of two directions of the EU Neighborhood Policy. It was developed in 2004 to create a more solid relationship between the EU and neighboring countries.

The first summit of the Eastern Partnership was held in 2009 in Prague (the Czech Republic), the second - in 2011 in Warsaw (Poland), the third summit was held in November 2013 in Vilnius (Lithuania).
