BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 17. As part of the COP29 Parliamentary Meeting, co-organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, participants adopted a final document, Trend reports.

The two-day gathering of parliamentarians on the sidelines of COP29 also set out next steps in the fight against climate change.

The meeting brought together key figures, including IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, IPU Vice-President from Azerbaijan, MP Sevil Mikayilova, MP Soltan Mammadov, and other officials.

Speaking to the event participants, MP Soltan Mammadov emphasized that COP29 will be another significant milestone for the global community.

He pointed out that all eyes are on Baku today, where over 70,000 representatives from various delegations, including international organizations, civil society, NGOs, media, youth and women's groups, volunteers, eco-activists, and parliamentarians, have gathered. Together, they are discussing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, such as climate change and environmental protection.

“Azerbaijan has extensive experience in successfully hosting international events. There’s no doubt that COP29 will be another major event for the global community,” the MP noted.

IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong also added that the parliamentary session at COP29 will go down in history as one of the largest and most productive parliamentary events.

“I’m confident that this session will be remembered as one of the most impactful and successful parliamentary events we’ve ever organized. The final document we’re presenting today is the result of a broad consultative process that sought to gather the views of as many parliamentarians as possible. This effort was meant to ensure that everyone feels engaged and committed to the recommendations in this document. This document can be seen as a blueprint for action by parliaments. It lays out clear, actionable commitments that parliaments are prepared to make. It also stands as a symbol of the strength of unity,” he explained.

On November 11, the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) officially kicked off in Baku.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP (Conference of the Parties) is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

With 198 parties to the Convention, COP is held annually unless otherwise agreed. The first COP was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is based in Bonn.
