The chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Rene van der Linden held a meeting with Azerbaijan’s heads of human rights organizations on 22 August.
The pre-election situation in the country, including the problem of political prisoners were discussed at the meeting, the human rights defender Eldar Zeynalov told Trend.
At the meeting with R. Van der Linden Zeynalov touched upon the issue of the “black PR”, as well as the arrest of two oppositionists for the “operation with a bomb” and Ruslan Bashirli. Zeynalov proposed Linden to introdiuce the political prisoners issue on the agenda of the PACE autumn session in October.
He also noted, the human rights activists are created obstacles in monitoring of the elections. В"I let Mr Linden know, that as far back as in 2000 the human rights activists had difficulties in the monitoring of the parliamentary elections.
A lot of artificial barriers had been created for that. For instance, I will be able to observe the way the citizens of Azerbaijan vote in Norway, however, in Azerbaijan there are no such conditions for the human rights defenders”, he noted.
